Marion County Property Appraiser and Tax Collector
Marion County is set to get a new property appraiser. The current property appraiser, Villie Smith, is stepping down after 23 years in the top job. Smith has worked for the county for 45 years. Three Republican candidates are running to replace Smith. Jimmy Cowan, a 28-year veteran of the Marion County Property Appraiser’s office, is one of the leading candidates. He has led one of the largest departments in the office since 2006.
Nick Nikkinen
Nick Nikkinen has worked as a property appraiser for over 25 years and served in both public and private sector appraisal functions. He is the Assistant Property Appraiser for Marion County and is a member of the International Association of Assessing Officers. He is also a certified assessment evaluator, and has the designation of Certified Assessment Administration Specialist. In addition to his extensive appraisal experience, Nikkinen has also served as a board member for several organizations.
In the election for Marion County Property Appraiser, the first round will feature three Republicans. David Moore, the current vice chairman of the Marion County Commission, has over twenty-eight years of real estate and financial experience. Former commissioner Lee Herbst has withdrew from the race after saying he was not interested in running for the position.
David Moore
David Moore, a District One commissioner, is attempting to stay out of the limelight. The former Commissioner is battling the coronavirus, which has forced him to self-isolate. He was exposed to the virus during a recent visit to the Grand View Baptist Church in Dunnellon. This has led to a series of events, including the cancellation of church services over the holiday weekend. Outgoing chairman Kathy Bryant asked Moore to lead the property appraisal commission meeting on Tuesday.
Moore, a real estate broker, has been a Marion County commissioner for two years. He has nearly three decades of experience in the financial and real estate industry. He also chairs the Value Adjustment Board, which investigates disputes over property values. Moore promises to deliver fair appraisals, promote transparency and improve efficiencies, and fight for the county’s interests with state officials.
